Windermere is surrounded by a system of sand bottom lakes connected together by canals to form what is known by the local Real Estate community as the Butler Chain. Lake Butler, the largest of eight lakes in the Butler Chain, is located on Windermere's west border. Lake Down the second largest of the lakes in the Butler Chain, is located on Windermere's east border, and Lake Bessie marks Windermere's southeast waterfront boundary.
The Windermere community's success is based factors other than rapid growth. The Town Council intentionally restricted growth and commercialism in Windermere, So today, Windermere's population is still under 2,000 residents. The population of Windermere was counted at around 1,800 in the year 2000 with approximately 545 families as of 1990. They include large corporation CEO's, foreign dignitaries, and professional sports superstars.

Everything in the has a tendency to change with time but the little town of Windermere hasn't much at all throughout it's history, but it's historic town hall has been completely refurbished and many local functions from weddings to social club meetings now take place in its turn of the century interior. Even the streets in old downtown have been left unpaved and get covered with pine straw, and Windermere homeowners intend to keep things as they are.
